What is the project?
Gladstone Regional Council has been approached to provide support for a community streetscaping project to enhance the visual appeal of public areas throughout the township of Builyan. The proposal involves the development of a streetscaping plan, species selection and planting by Council with ongoing maintenance provided by community volunteers.
What decision was made?
Council has decided that it will not be proceeding with the project.
While the responses did show the community could be open to improvements throughout the township, this project was not the right fit for the residents' vision for Builyan.
Several concerns were raised in the submissions including, but not limited to:
- Water security and the resource requirements needed for the project,
- The significant long-term commitment required by volunteers in a low population area with a limited volunteer pool,
- Lack of community support for streetscaping due to the effect on the town's overall aetheric, access for emergency services and potentially increasing disaster risks.
Thank you to the community for providing valuable feedback during our engagement period.
